Orthopedic surgery in specialty became organized in the years between the two world wars. The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (The American Board of Orthopedic Surgery), was one of the first companies to recognize the specialty, and extended the first certified specialists, general surgeons in 1934, after training in specialized hospitals for a period 3 to 5 years.
