Finnegan undergoes range of motion exercises during one of his rehab sessions.
voir la vidéoFinnegan gets put through his range of motion exercises, including flexion and extension of his hind limbs, by his canine rehab therapist Leann. This is to help restore as much range of motion to his hips as possible, status post surgery. Since Finnegan developed severe hip displasia at nine months old, he had to have the neck and head of both his femurs removed, which in veterinary medicine is known as an FHO. Scar tissue, muscle and cartilage then fill the area to form a false joint. For six weeks post op, any dog that undergoes an FHO must be kept quietly crated and walked on a lease, and assisted with a towel on their hind area due to pain and discomfort. Finnegan was uncomfortable for the first three weeks particularly, but he did really well all in all and I am very happy for him. He's a cutie. [ go to Youtube.com ]

Finnegan SmallBallWeightBearingExercises
voir la vidéoFinnegan is balanced by Leann, canine rehab therapist, and a trainee, on an exercise ball which serves two purposes; it stretches out his hips and gently helps him bear weight on his hind legs to improve his mobility and range of motion and decrease the chance he will tear a muscle or injure his knee while recovering from his surgery. This video was shot approximately six weeks post op. All dogs must first have heat applied to their hips, and have their hind legs moved gently through their normal range of motion before being placed on the small balance ball. In other words, don't try this at home unless you have been trained the proper sequence of rehab treatments and procedures. [ go to Youtube.com ]

Echo - Adopted!
voir la vidéoEcho is a gorgeous 1-2 year-old Aussie mix male who came to Canine Lifeline from a crowded dog shelter. He arrived at the dog shelter with a dislocated hip and came to Canine Lifeline to get the medical attention he needed. X-rays confirmed a badly dislocated hip which will require a femoral head ostectomy (FHO) to correct. Echo's surgery will cost at least $800 and is scheduled for the week of Feb. 1. Echo is a wonderful, affectionate young dog who really deserves a chance to live a pain-free, happy life. He gets along beautifully with other dogs and doesn't seem to mind cats.
