What is a good eczema lotion for a baby with really dry skin, not ...

I discovered this Goats Milk Moisturising Cream about a year ago; prior to that, I was using the steroid cream from my GP twice a day just to get some relief from the itching on my shins and ribs. Now I slather this on every day after showering and have not had to use the steroid cream for several months. This cream works – on days when I am in a tearing hurry and skip using it, I really know about it by bedtime when I am itching and on fire again. It really is brilliant – I have recommended it to friends with eczema and psoriasis and all have reported significant improvement in their [more...]

11 Causes of Dry Skin Problems

A dry skin problem can be uncomfortable and even maddening.  Your skin might feel tight and painful; it might look dull or red or flaky.  Worst of all is the itchiness -- the sort of overwhelming itchiness that makes you feel like you're infested with fleas, that keeps you awake at night, miserably raking your skin with a back scratcher. "Dry skin is extremely common," says Barney Kenet, MD, a dermatologist from New York Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center.  "There are probably close to 100 million dried out, itchy people in this country right now." Q&A: HELP! Any Eczema sufferers here, or people who study med or ...

After washing off the makeup, I noticed the corner of my lips became dry. The next day, it started to peel again. I realised the 2004 Nov problem has returned. I tried to use back Decocort for a month but it doesn’t seem to be effective anymore. I went back to NSC and told the dermatologist (yes a different one) about this problem and he sent me for a skin patch test. It turned out that I was allergic to a fragrance called “Lyral”. Lyral is a fragrance that is present in many cosmetic products. I was prescribed Betamethasone 0.0125% and white soft paraffin for the problem. I was told to [more...]

Easy Latex special effects « Shannon Fennell's Blog

Apply the red base. Blend the edges well into the skin so you don’t have hard lines between the skin colour and the red – you can use a little pink too if you want. Let the paint dry (or powder if using theatrical make-up). Put the gel, vaseline, gelatin or whatever you are using on top of the dried red paint – DON’T smudge, just apply it lightly so as not to disturb the face paint base as you are applying wet on top of dry! Apply just to the middle or in a blister shape within the red patch – do not go to the edge! Now lay a single layer of your torn tissue over the gel – you [more...]

My Stupid Leg Strikes Again

The Stupid leg is being, well, stupid. When it went to hell sans the handbasket four years ago, there were changes on my ankle bone that I didn't pay attention to. At first, it was this dry, flaky skin patch that covered the area the size of a quarter. Then a lemon, then it became orange sized. In rapid succession after that, the flaky skin became constantly scabbed-and well, long time readers know the rest. One year of dealing with two ulcers that just didn't want to go away. Healing Red Clover and Lavender Skin Salve « Nourishing Words

Making a skin salve, using infused oil and beeswax, is a simple kitchen process. It would be fine to use the oils directly on the skin, but a salve is more portable, and a little neater to apply. Round metal tins or tiny glass jars are easily available at most healthfood stores. The whole process took less than a half hour. 1/2 cup infused red clover oil 1/2 cup infused lavender oil 1 to 2 ounces of beeswax Warm the oil in a small saucepan over very low heat. Add beeswax, stirring to dissolve. The more beeswax you add, the harder the salve will be when it cools. For my batch of salve, I [more...]
